Pre-School

Welcome to Beaulieu Pre-School!

Our Pre-School launched in January 2016 and offers a rich curriculum that ensures excellent preparation for our Reception class including sessions in: language development, simple nature study, art, craft, cookery, poetry, music & drama, PE & games, French, history, geography, science and animal care. There is an excellent mix of free continuous, formal and outdoor learning.

We encourage our Pre-Schoolers to rise to challenges, build friendships and develop as individuals, celebrating their own natural talents.

Our approach represents a holistic method of teaching and learning which encourages children to become independent and confident. Children have a huge capacity for learning and our carefully organised and ordered classrooms promote the learning activity, where all materials are at the child’s height and are easily accessed by all. They are also appropriately enjoyable and challenging, to enable children of all levels of ability to make significant progress through fun and play.

We aim to provide a high standard of individual and group care. Children are supported in various ways: by good role modelling, interaction, scaffolding, observation and assessment. We also focus on working one to one and setting up meaningful activities to support children’s learning.

The pupils have all day access to a sand and water area, a designated play area, which is separate from the Primary School playground, and access to the Primary School playground and equipment during their working sessions.

We recognise that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates, and that all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected. This approach ensures that the Pre-School meets the overarching aim of improving outcomes and reflects that it is every child's right to grow up safe; healthy; enjoying and achieving; making a positive contribution; and with economic well-being. We want to encourage our Pre-Schoolers to explore, experiment, be active, creative, ask questions, rehearse and practise skills and negotiate with others in a safe, secure and nurturing environment.

We will provide daily opportunities for parents to be involved in their daughter’s education and care while at Pre-School and we aim to work in partnership with them to provide the very best for their daughters.

The Foundation Stage

The Foundation Stage is made up of children aged 30-60 months (3 to 5 years). It begins in Pre-School and concludes at the end of the Reception year. We follow the ‘Development Matters’ curriculum, which is a curriculum that is delivered through play, giving each unique child opportunities to interact in positive relationships and enabling environments, allowing them to learn and grow as individuals.

Below are the Characteristics of Effective Learning identified in this curriculum and the 7 areas of learning and development:

The Pre-School Day

Beaulieu Pre-School invites you to join us for a minimum of four hours per day. This can be used as NEF funded hours, where the Jersey Education Department pay for 20 hours of Nursery education per week for 38 weeks of the year, term time only.

The scheme is for children who will turn four between 1st September and 31st August in the school year before they begin Reception. The States of Jersey pay the fees directly to us for the 20 hours and you will not need to by involved in this financial arrangement.

Although the Pre-School runs on a three term basis, from 8:30am to 3:00pm, our extended hours service of 8:30am – 5:30pm are available to all Pre-school pupils. We also offer a before-school provision for our Pre-Schoolers, where they can be dropped off at 8:15am each morning, 15 minutes before School starts.

During holiday periods we operate a Holiday Scheme for our pupils called Beau Belles. Beau Belles includes an Easter Holiday Club, Summer Holiday Club and Christmas Holiday Club. School staff members are involved in the operation of this club, so the girls know the staff well and feel happy and secure with them.

The Pre-School comprises of 2 rooms with a maximum of 24 children, separated into 3 teaching groups. Each child is assigned a key worker.

The girls are able to wear their own clothes to Pre-School.

Learning Opportunities outside of the Pre-School rooms

During the day Pre-Schoolers have an opportunity to use the School gym for whole class physical development sessions and they join the rest of the Primary School for special class assemblies, performances and celebrations.

They have sessions using the PCs in our mezzanine and opportunities to use iPads for activities that encourage hand eye co-ordination or language and maths skills. They have opportunities to learn within the Reception classroom, visiting for story times and other activities that are relevant to their individual needs.

The girls also utilise the playground on a daily basis, accessing bikes, scooters and other playground equipment such as hoola hoops and soft balls etc.

The girls visit the music room in the Secondary School, where they are taught songs and percussion skills. Research shows that children who are actively involved in music (who play instruments or sing regularly) do better in reading and math when they start school, are better able to focus and control their bodies, play better with others and have higher self-esteem.

The girls visit the School Library for story time and have an opportunity to bring books home to share. They also pay regular visits to our beautiful Chapel.

The girls also venture out into our wooded area, exploring, developing respect for the outdoor environment, learning about taking risks, taking care and taking responsibility. They also visit the local area, parks and places of interest and we always welcome any parental support that is available.

Come and join us!

The Pre-School team look forward to meeting you and working along side you, to ensure a super experience is had by all!
